From the Ski Slopes to the Soda Stands: The Early Years of Peter van Stolk
“The customer's not always right. F--- that. If you're always trying to cater to everyone, you have no soul.”

A Retail Holiday Tale
I had my own interesting retail experience the other day, which I think you might find entertaining. In keeping with holiday tales it may be enlightening too. I like to keep tabs on the current retail environment, and also as a consumer I enjoy going to stores such as Costco to see what interesting values their good buyers have found. The point I am making in this article is that successful retailers take the appropriate actions to deal with the environment at hand, rather than deciding it is out of their control.

Get your finances in order for 2009
Over the past 30 days our economy went on a series of “oohs” and “awhhs”. The media is to blame for this massive panic. Everyone is encouraged to turn off the TV and focus on their small business finances for the next quarter – Q1 of 2009 is rapidly approaching, are you going to have the finances to get into the groove?

What to Give Your Clients for the Holidays. . . A Marketing Firm’s Perspective.
Every year the holiday rush begins a little earlier. When I was growing up, you really wouldn’t think much about the December holidays until the day after Thanksgiving. Today, come mid-September, it’s not uncommon to see displays featuring Thanksgiving, Christmas and Hanukkah right along side the much anticipated Halloween costumes candy, and home décor at your favorite retail store.

Be Grateful
I do try to consciously practice gratitude every day, but certainly Thanksgiving is a reminder to us all.

Have you Factored your Relationships into your Business plan?
Christmas is a time which highlights different aspects of our lives to us. Our Relationships (yes with a capital R for importance) is one such area. At Christmas, the lack of investment, perhaps the high turn over, and the profit or loss of our Relationships is put on a platter alongside the turkey.

Don’t Be Fearful, Be Thankful
Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday: here’s why...

How About, THANK YOU?
It started with a turkey. In the early days of a start-up company I once worked for, a plump turkey was a small thank you token given to employees around the holidays. The turkey-giving practice lasted maybe three years, until the growing size of the organization necessitated its change. And while enhanced benefits emerged to replace that poultry gift, I found it amazing that the missing turkey still appeared as a resentment issue five years later in employee forums.

Dating and Working Online.
Dating online is like going to Costco for mayo and coming out with a year's supply of turkey.

The Holiday Season: A Marketing Opportunity & A PR Necessity
The holiday season offers a unique marketing opportunity; one that you can’t afford to miss. Even during rough times, people and businesses spend money during the holidays. The forth quarter offers you a unique opportunity to get the word out about your business, service or product. The holiday season is also a period when the media is looking to run articles and segments on gift giving stories. Consumers spent $407 million on Thanksgiving Day 2010, a 28% increase compared to Thanksgiving Day in 2009, according to ComScore, - and that was just Thanksgiving!

The Turkeys We Send To D.C.
You've heard the old joke, the one they tell every year at this time: "Know why they aren't having Thanksgiving in (Chicago)? They sent the turkey to Washington!" Usually, the quip refers to the president - any president - but lately, all the elected federal officials from both parties have been particularly turkey-like....
