Start New Today … Be A Thermostat Not a Thermometer
No ... I promise you I haven't lost my mind, nor am I encouraging you to "shape shift" into an inanimate object. One thing each of us can be assured of in life is that we'll all experience a roller coaster of events and emotions that accompany those events. People we love will die, people we work with will be dishonest and take credit for the things we do, and companies who we absolutely knew were going to buy from us ... won't. You can be assured that in business you'll experience just as much good as you will bad. Wow ... how uplifting huh?

Lesson #3: Be Ruthless and Rise to the Challenge
“You make the wine and I’ll sell it,” Gallo once told his younger brother. Gallo never wanted to be involved in the fine details of making fine wine. What Gallo wanted was to get out on the sales floor, to hit the streets, and to sell his stuff. He became known as a ruthless businessman for one reason; he was good at what he did and he did not let anything stand in his way. Gallo always got what he wanted because he was never willing to settle for anything less.

Sorry About the Understatement!
In a recent Post, I recalled a story from Maryann Keller's Rude Awakening: The Rise, Fall, and Struggle for Recovery of General Motors about the extreme deference paid to GM middle managers. I did it from memory, but ordered the book anyway. I got the stocked refrigerator and the torn-out hotel room wall part right (mostly—it was soft drinks, not beer), but had forgotten the story that preceded it—which made my little vignette small change by comparison. An exec reported this to Ms Keller about a not-atypical incident that marked his more junior days as a GM staffer:

Sales Tip - Stupendous Sales Results Accent Tremendous Value and Avoid Horrendous and Hazardous Actions
Salespeople get more sales with a focus on the only four words in the English language, which end in 'dous': tremendous, horrendous, stupendous, and hazardous.

While it’s important not to rush the Fulfillment Step, it’s important to finish as quickly as possible and still get the sale. The sooner you successfully seal off this compartment [of the Sandler submarine], the sooner you’ve got the sale. However, it’s not always easy to know when to conclude your presentation.

Top Salespeople Secret #3 During a Down Economy: Renew, Renew, Renew
Top salespeople act and think in ways that they are less affected by negative talk during a down economy. Top salespeople don’t let the media guide their thinking. A third action top salespeople take during down economy talk is to renew integrated pieces in their overall marketing plan.

Thermometer Manager or Thermostat Leader?
The late 19th century Irish playwright, critic, and social reformer, George Bernard Shaw, had a lot of useful things to say about personal effectiveness. A few of his comments have hung on my mirror or been posted in my day planner over the years. This one speaks to a core management-leadership choice we all have; "The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends upon the unreasonable man."
