Calvin Klein Biography
| |
| As one of the biggest names in the fashion world, the Calvin Klein biography is the story of a boy who discovered his passion at an early age. Born on November 19, 1942, in the Bronx, New York, Klein was raised in a middle-class family of Jewish Hungarian immigrants. While other kids were out playing sports in the streets, Klein was at home, practicing his sewing and sketching designs for hours on end. His parents didn’t know where he had gotten the talent or the interest – neither of them were fashion fiends – but it was one they were happy to watch grow. |

Better Together
| |
| During the Beijing Olympics, beach volleyball players Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh were undefeated in their second gold medal Olympics, with an amazing record of 108 consecutive wins. Watching the advancing duo during the Olympic coverage, I heard commentators mention that when either woman was asked during interviews which one of them was better, they responded, "We're better together." |

Barack Obama Election Ushers in A Different World
| |
| This week I was interviewed by Dominic Carter of New York 1, on his program called Inside City Hall. New York 1 is an all-news program that is popular in New York City, and Dominic Carter is someone I have a great deal of respect for. He should have a national show, but then New York would miss out on his full time and dynamic presence here. He describes me as “a man not known for keeping his opinions to himself” and the interview spanned two consecutive nights. |

Think BIG - A Lesson from a Little One
| |
| Like most of us, I learned about the mechanics of goal setting early in my career. Although I learned the theory of goal setting in graduate school, it wasn’t until later in my career that I learned about the powerful psychology goal setting and how imbedding goals into the walls of our mind unleashes the real power.
But it was only a few years ago that I experienced first-hand the power of thinking big… and it came at the hands of someone quite small. My oldest daughter was seven at the time. She loved to play catch with Dad. The object we threw - a tennis balls, football, one of those squishy balls - mattered little, but the challenge of consecutive catches matter very much to her. |

| |
| This article is based on the author’s experience in partnering with a Level 5 CEO who was orchestrating his own succession. This leadership transition represented the first at this level since the 153-year-old company became an employee owned business in a buyout from the last family owner. The company became employee-owned after 140 years of family ownership, growing more than 10 times in 10 years following the transfer of ownership. They have sustained more than 10 years of consecutive profitability as a privately held organization. Today, they generate revenue of more than $1.5 billion with over 2,500 employees of whom more than 300 are stockholders. |

Is there a Place for Destiny in Your Life?
| |
| I recently read an article online that asked the question, "Where will you be in 25 years?" then invited me to first consider where I was 25 years ago as an way of introducing the role of destiny in our lives. I found the exercise interesting and worthwhile so I thought I'd share it with you.
Where were you 25 years ago in 1983?
Me, I was 35 years old. I'd graduated from veterinary college 9 years previously, and I had purchased my own veterinary clinic (a former out patient clinic of a larger hospital) for the rip roaring price of one dollar, which was about all the savings I had at the time. The rest of the purchase price, if memory serves some $26,000 was financed at the local bank. Not long after, the loan that started at 12% shot up to 19%. |

More, Bigger, Faster
| |
| I'm a football fan and my team (the Atlanta Falcons) started this season with three consecutive losses. That got me to thinking about "back to basics." Ladies and gentlemen, this is a sales rep: One who moves a greater number of larger deals through the funnel faster. |

Attacking Fatigue in the Workplace
| |
| A major workplace issue today is employee fatigue. Alertness in the workplace pays for itself through productivity, safety and quality. It doesn’t happen by accident. Managers can minimize fatigue by attacking it on seven fronts: (1) education, (2) start times, (3) shift length, (4) fixed vs. rotating shifts, (5) consecutive days of work, (6) employee preferences and (7) overtime. |
