Lesson #4: Infuse Your Company with a Survival Mentality

“I started The Body Shop in 1976 simply to create a livelihood for myself and my two daughters, while my husband, Gordon, was trekking across the Americas,” recalls Roddick. “I had no training or experience and my only business acumen was Gordon’s advice to take sales of £300 a week. Nobody talks of entrepreneurship as survival, but that's exactly what it is and what nurtures creative thinking.”

Russell Simmons Divorce

In 2006, it made headlines in the worlds of fashion and hip hop as two of the people at the forefront of both were splitting up. They were big celebrities, used to living a big life, and now, Russell Simmons’ divorce from model Kimora Lee was big news. After eight years of marriage and two daughters later, the hip hop moguls were ending things. “Kimora and I will remain committed parents and caring friends with great love and admiration for each other,” Simmons said at the time of the announcement. “We will also continue to work side by side on a daily basis as partners in all of our business.”

2.3 Women workers and the work of women: Working Out of Poverty

| Today’s girl child is tomorrow’s older woman worker, and it is her opportunities
and experiences now that will shape her ability to obtain and
maintain decent work throughout her adult life, and enjoy security and protection
in her old age. If girls, compared to boys, face negative cultural attitudes
and practices and discrimination from birth, they will grow up to be
women with greater constraints and few choices and opportunities. In turn,
they will be less able to influence positively the lives of their daughters and
sons, so that poverty is likely to be passed on from one generation to the
next. |

I'm Every Woman!

This week, we celebrated International Woman's Day - not something I take lightly. I honor, respect and celebrate the women who have 'walked before me' - without whom I would not be living this life of freedom and opportunity. This past weekend, I spoke at the Amazing Woman's Day event in Toronto - the Canadian launch of this international initiative. Wow! Words cannot describe the experience. There's something very powerful when a room is filled with women, from all walks of life, each with their own story - mothers - sisters - entrepreneurs - career women - retirees - stepmoms - daughters - entertainers - authors - visionaries and so on.

Up In Smoke

Recently, I saw two attractive teenage girls smoking cigarettes. I watched them and it was obvious that they were new smokers. As a father who has watched two of his daughters go through the pains of death trying to quit smoking, I wanted to give the two young women a warning and a lecture. I didn’t do it, because they could rightfully have said it was none of my business. As an employer, I looked at those two girls and knew that it would definitely jeopardize their opportunities for getting some jobs. Many companies do not hire smokers. I looked at them as future parents and knew what that smoke would do to their babies, should they continue to smoke and ever become mothers.
