| I’m 100 percent sick and tired of hearing about how bad things are. A recent Time Magazine cover has a picture of people in lines from the great depression—insinuating we’re experiencing a similar time.

The Ultimate Bunny-Hop: The Rise of the Playboy Empire

Hefner was now unemployed and had just $8,000 to create the magazine of his dreams. He used $75 to purchase the rights to the never-before published nude pictures of Marilyn Monroe, before she had become a star. Ignoring the legal risks, Hefner decided to feature the photos on the cover and in the centerfold of his first issue. Named Playboy after a sports car that was struggling to get into production at the time, Hefner was not optimistic about its success. “On the first issue we put out we left the date off [December 1953] so that, if it didn’t sell right away, it could stay on the news-stands until it did,” he recalls.

Big Hat No Cattle

I did exactly what the magazine wanted me to do. I bought it solely for an article featured on the cover. But when I got it home and started searching for the piece I wanted to read, I couldn't find it. The headline drew me in, but hidden behind other features was an article with a different title that sort of, kind of, talked about the topic. I felt cheated.

Why We Worry About the Wrong Things, Part II

I mentioned it earlier in a round-up, but I really want to draw people's attention to Time's cover article this week. The magazine has done some very good work lately, and this week's cover is another example. It painstakingly gets underneath our human penchant for getting possibilities, probabilities, and likelihoods all messed up, worrying over the least likely things, and being oblivious to the things that have a high chance of killing us.

So I Got Mad and Threw It Away!

| Your clients and prospects have very short attention spans. They want what they want and they want it now. If you make them a promise (like offering a particular article on the cover of your magazine) you need to deliver on that promise quickly, or you risk losing their attention.

Storytelling for High Concept and High Touch

After hearing Daniel Pink speak about his book A Whole New Mind: Moving from the Information Age to the Conceptual Age for the fourth time, I finally read it cover to cover (less than a day). I finally got what he was talking about when he said jobs that are high touch are here to stay. That is, jobs that build relationships between business and client whether it's B2B or B2C.

The Internet's Marketing Silver Bullet

Appearing in the Wall Street Journal, Time magazine, Oprah, CNN, or even in a local or regional media outlet can immediately separate you and your business from all of your competitors. Now that you have news coverage you can take that TV segment or magazine or newspaper article and magnify it online via blogs, and social media. This is where traditional PR becomes the Internet’s silver bullet; the most important marketing tool available.
