8 Best Practices for Online Learning
| |
| Many organizations are using online learning instead of classroom based training because they believe it is more cost effective, convenient, and less time consuming. For those of us that have sat through poorly designed online learning programs, however, it can be experienced as a form of torture. |

Fear of Authenticity
| |
| Since the earliest days of human culture some have sought to control the minds of others. Methods have progressed, but the objective remains the same - obedience and conformity.

Musings from the Marathon (and How it Can Help Your Business)
| |
| Now that I¹ve completed 3 marathons, I¹ve come to the conclusion that I think every business owner and entrepreneur should complete a marathon at least once in their life. No, not because I want partners to share in the torture and agony, but for the same reasons why I do. Let me explain.

Leveraging Your Way to Big Brand Status
| |
| When it comes to creating a business brand, small business owners often feel they can’t do it alone. No surprise. You can’t! Yet throughout school we’re taught that we have to “do it” on our own otherwise we’re “cheating.” This lone ranger approach is the demise of millions of businesses. |

When Opportunity Knocks…
| |
| …or as we say in California, when the Universe says “Yes!” Have you ever gotten exactly what you wished for and then, moments later, felt your stomach tighten, your heart race, your mind screaming the admonishment, “What have I done?!”
Why is it sometimes more comfortable wanting something than actually manifesting it? |

How to Change the World: Defensibility
| |
| Blog reader Curtis Thompson asked me a very good question a few days ago: What should an entrepreneur say when she’s asked what makes her company defensible? This question is more and more common as more and more entrepreneurs start “Web 2.0 companies,” and investors torture themselves by wondering why they didn’t fund YouTube. |

Get Smart - Offer a Proposal
| |
| Remember Maxwell Smart from the 1960’s comedy series Get Smart! When he was in a bind, caught by the baddies, he would often start off his explanation by saying “Would you believe…” in an effort to convince his enemies that – although he was captured and possibly facing torture - he had the upper hand.
How do you handle the situation when you are facing clients, and they expect you to make them an offer? Do you simply say, “I’ll give you a quote”.
This can often be the ‘kiss of death’ for your sales efforts.

To Pay or Not To Pay... That is the Question
| |
| It must sometimes seem as though government bureaucracy and regulation exist simply to torture the hard-working small business owner. Many of my clients find themselves with an interest in bringing on a summer intern or two, paid or unpaid, and are faced with even more "dos and don'ts" from the state and Federal government! What's a struggling small business to do? |

Freelancing From Home with Small Children
| |
| As wonderful as it sounds, working from home to spend more time with your children is more akin to torture at times. Not that you don't love that angel who needs to be held all but thirteen minutes of the day or the toddler who always manages to test his favorite crayon on the wall when you're trying to make a phone call, but there are unique challenges to trying to parent and hold down a career at the same time. It is possible to work from home with small children, but like so many things as a parent, this too shall require flexibility.

Use Your Senses
| |
| I'm thinking that with her senses cut short, only seeing straight ahead, no periphery vision, her hearing muted, she was off balance. Slightly off kilter. This also made her depressed. She was missing out on fun, like seeing a bug out of the corner of her eye that she could stalk, play with and then torture.
