What would happen if we did that more often? A few years ago when I was in Greece, I picked up a string of beautiful red and silver beads. There are 15 of them, strung on a lovely silver chain and tied off with a silver tassel. The Greeks use them as prayer beads but I’ve developed a new use for them.

He stood, gripping the sides of the counter, his fingers white knuckled from the strain. I'd seen my boss, Mr. Burke, stand there countless times before, studying the inventory, looking for just the right item for the customer, but I'd never seen him like this; his face and neck a livid red, his neck muscles strained, beads of sweat on a brow that only moments before had been dry. I heard Allison, his assistant whisper, "Go get Mrs. Burke." Someone scampered away, relieved to escape the tense scene. I stood there frozen, uncertain what was happening, even more uncertain what to do. After all, I was just part-time help, spending a few summer months between college semesters learning about the real world of business.

A Box Full of Stuff
All of us go through those seemingly insignificant points in life that, in retrospect, are turning points. I remember the day that our family came to the decision that my grandfather could no longer live in his house alone, but would need to move into a retirement center. He was well into his 90s and had called that house his home for over 60 years. It was full of trinkets, mementos, personal treasures, and memories.
