Joke or No Joke
| |
| I was having an online conversation in a class I am teaching about teams at work. The discussion was relative to having online messages misinterpreted. Clearly we have all experienced this uncomfortable situation more than once. I got so fascinated about this topic that I wrote a book on it a few years ago.
One student brought up a situation that is common in person as well as online, but the damage done online is usually much larger. This is when a person tries to rib another person with a joke, but the meaning on the part of the receiver is taken literally. The writer is astonished when the reader takes umbrage at the barb. Starting New Habits is Uncomfortable … But Necessary for Success!
| |
| Well I survived my first day of my new commitments, and you know what?
It wasn't that bad!
I'm not saying that it was easy. If I did ... I'd be lying!
Every time we start new habits it is very uncomfortable, but if we continue to do things the same way over and over and follow our old habits ... we can expect to live with the uncomfortable feeling of never achieving more. In my opinion, the second we stop striving to become better, we begin to die.
You tell me ... What could be more uncomfortable than death? |

Painfully Employed: They got it bad and that aint good
| |
| When I was 13, I heard my great aunt say that she purchased an expensive car because she hated her job and needed an incentive to stay. Years later, when I struggled with my own discontent and watched others struggles with theirs, her words resonated with me. I may have been gainfully employed at the time, but I felt painfully employed.
During my struggle, I vacillated between excitement, swinking (not quite swimming, not quite sinking) and painful employment: excited with any new opportunities, swinking when they didn't fulfill my expectations, and painfully employed when I became too comfortable being uncomfortable.
Three words, "comfortable being uncomfortable," and one quote, "if you don't know what port you are sailing to, no wind is favorable," summed up my painful employment. |

Howling Dog
| |
| If you have made a poor choice of employment do something about it. For your own peace of mind do something! Anything is better than remaining in an unpleasnt situation. It is, of course, a different story if your current employment is necessary because of the economic situation. there is not much that can be done about this in the short term. You may have to put up with employment that you would not normally choose or which is possibly unpleasant. Internalise the fact that this is a temporary situation. |
