Innovative Opportunities: A Byproduct of Unemployment
| |
| Unemployment may not be a welcomed situation, but we are learning that it is not always a bad situation either. Remarkably, we are seeing a recent trend where some top managers of large companies are up and quitting their jobs without having another offer lined up. These mavericks are announcing to the business world that they have higher aspirations and they have the courage and self confidence to pursue them. “The decision to quit a senior position to look for a better one is unconventional, to say the least. For years executives and headhunters have hewed closely to the rule that the most attractive CEO candidates are the ones who must be poached.” (McGregor, 2009) Changing the rules of the game and making it your game- that is exactly the type of attitude I strive to uncover in people. |

Small business profits threat or opportunity
| |
| Turn-on your television or pick up a newspaper and all that is reported right now, apart from the present swine flu problem, is the "credit crunch" - falling house prices, rising unemployment, businesses going bust, repossessions, bankruptcies and more...
So what should small businesses do?
Well this depends on whether you see this as an opportunity or a threat. There are no doubt certain businesses that will find these times more difficult than others, for example, only today there are reports about how the number of unemployed lorry drivers has gone up almost 5-fold since this time last year.
Where businesses are selling less and therefore resulting in a less of a need for transport, then transport companies will see a dip in demand and as a consequence might need to make redundancies. |

|
Are there any businesses that are recession-proof?
| |
| There are probably many businesses that are recession-proof, but things might be different in the present down-turn as things might get tougher with falling property prices, rising unemployment and so on.
If you are looking for a business that is recession-proof try typing the term "recession-proof business" in the upper left box and then choose from the hits there. This search will turn up sites giving you their wisdom on top tips to survive a recession along with other blogs and websites telling you which businesses are most likely to survive during a recession.
I will leave it to you to decide on which of these writers know their stuff. However, if you hit on something that looks like the type of business you would like to buy or even set up yourself, then do a bit more research on that type of business. |

The Attitude of Gratitude
| |
| Humbly grateful or gratefully humble? In a recent sermon Dr. Jack Graham of Prestonwood Baptist Church in Dallas points out that each person in his or her lifetime will cultivate either an attitude or spirit of thanksgiving, gratitude and thankfulness, or an attitude or life as a cynic, full of anger, bitterness and arrogance. He expands on this by pointing out that a grateful child, by-and-large, is far more likely to be a happy child. He also says a person who is hostile, angry and critical, who is a fault-finder, is basically an ungrateful person. |

The Desperation Solution
| |
| You have probably heard it said that necessity is the mother of invention. If necessity is its mother, desperation must certainly have been its father. Creative people often come up with breakthrough solutions only when they're forced to.
Professors from the University of Chicago and Harvard determined that there is direct correlation between when unemployment runs out and when people get a job. While desperation may be a great motivator, it's not always the most productive way to perform with excellence. I believe there is a win/win solution here as you and I-as mature, functioning people-can set our own deadlines.

What are the Upsides of This Major Downturn?
| |
| Well, we've all heard plenty about the major down turn that we're in the midst of. The news media is having a real hay day with it all. Unemployment continues to rise, home foreclosures are everywhere, and no one seems to know quite what to do about it all.
But let's take a step back and look at this from a different perspective.
Let's say for the moment that we live in a universe where there are no accidents. I know that can be a bit of a challenge in its own right, especially when it looks like there's been a major accident on the universal freeway, but I don't think so.
I think it's more likely that we've been paid a visit from the Universal UPS Truck. |

Online Business? Why Do We Need One?
| |
| A few years ago, the economy was roaring. Stock prices were going up, interest rates were staying low, the online business industry was booming and unemployment was down. A year later and those indicators were all going in opposite direction. It is difficult to know if the turmoil is over but we have to have faith.
We have to be optimistic that the current situation is a short-term one and we have to believe that long-term prospects of growth and good times are just around the corner. But that doesn't mean that there won't be downturns, along the way. We have to ask ourselves: 'are we ready to take advantage of the good as well as the bad times - are we ready to start an online business?'

Are You Worrying about Retention During the Recession? You'd Better Be!

| Is retention an issue for your company? Recently when I've asked this question of folks, their immediate response is a loud "NO" quickly followed by "employees are lucky to have a job right now. We don't have to worry about retaining them. They aren't going anywhere." In a sarcastic tone, I quickly retort with something like, if you were to lose a good employee right now, what would that turnover cost you? After they try to calculate it and get crazy numbers that are so far off base, I'll share the simple rule of thumb of 50 - 150% of the employee's annual salary. Can you afford that expense to hit the bottomline right now just to lose one employee? If that isn't enough to make you think about retention right now, let's talk a little more about the impact of losing even more employees when the economy picks up and the labor market is shor |

Focusing on the Unemployment Numbers is Wrong
| |
| For some time now we have been flooded with unemployment numbers that fluctuate by fractional differences. I may be a small voice in the wilderness on this one but the government statisticians have us focused in the wrong direction. Dont get me wrong, we need to see an improving economy but getting people back to work under 19th and 20th century plans will not work! |

Middle Class Is Failing
| |
| The middle class concept is failing millions of people because it is based on myths and formulas that worked for our parents but will no longer prove successful today. President Obama suggested, "the middle class is at a make or break point." What he should be telling you is that it no longer works. The middle class has been failing its members for decades, this is not a new thing. |

| |
| At a time when the nations economy is softening, and perhaps worse, many entrepreneurs are considering layoffs as a way to cut costs. But eliminating jobs does not always result in immediate cost-savings. There are often severance packages to finance and unemployment benefits to cover. In addition, the morale of the employees left behind always suffers.
There are ways to decrease labor costs that can save jobs, however. And, in many instances, these strategies can save money immediately, keep unemployment insurance rates down, improve or at least maintain employee morale and save jobs. |

Jobless Recovery --- An Oxymoron
| |
| Jobless Recovery ----- Every time I hear this term I want to vomit. Wikopedia states ---- A jobless recovery or jobless growth is a phrase used by economists to describe the recovery from a recession which does not produce strong growth in employment.
How can we possibly recover if we aren't creating jobs? The September unemployment rate is in. We lost another 263,000 jobs and unemployment in this country is now at 9.8%. Tell one of those hundreds of thousands of people that are out of work that the economy is in recovery and they are liable to smack you in the mouth.

Recession --- Its Time You Ended
| |
| We should have recognized the signs. We should have seen the red flags. Thousands of employees were being laid off. Now, we are told things are starting to get better. We are in recovery, albeit a "Jobless Recovery". Give me a break. Every time I hear that term I want to puke. Until the unemployment rate decreases in the majority of our states - we will all feel the results of the recession. Tell those people in the unemployment line that the recession is over and risk getting punched in the face.

Join an Easy Home Based Business Opportunity - Misleading Government Unemployment Numbers for April
| |
| The U.S. government unemployment numbers for April, 2010 were released last week. They showed that the economy added a net 290,000 jobs. This was a major topic on all the weekend television shows.
I live in Tampa, FL but I could still hear the standing ovation that the President Obama administration received all the way up in Washington, DC. President Obama proudly declared that this jobs growth was "very encouraging news."
But these government unemployment numbers are misleading. So should unemployed workers look for a lucrative, easy home based business opportunity? |

Personal Responsibility: Make Your Own Job
| |
| Our nation is locked in one of the greatest ideological battles in its history. Some want the government to do more for people, and spend more on social programs such as unemployment. Others see a terrific threat in tax-and-spend tactics that leave us with an unbelievable national debt. Even if we could handle the debt in future generations, will our government's current "stimulus" (bail-out) strategy really accomplish anything positive? Will people have the motivation and inspiration to create and achieve things when the burden of taxes is higher than any of us has heretofore seen? Will we become so dependent on government programs (like unemployment) that we lose both the will and the ability to earn our own livings? Over time, these are clearly dangers.
