The Youngsters Behind YouTube: The Early Years of Chad Hurley and Steve Chen

| “Everybody aspires to be a star,” says Steve Chen, a Taiwanese immigrant who came to the U.S. with his family in the hopes for a better life. Chen’s aspirations became a reality when he, along with Pennsylvania-born Chad Hurley created what is today the world’s largest online video website. YouTube, having been launched no more than two years ago has now become a global sensation, propelling both Hurley and Chen to the top of Business 2.0’s list of “The 50 People Who Matter Now.” YouTube was also named TIME magazine’s 2006 “Invention of the Year.” When Hurley and Chen decided to sell their company, they did so for a hefty price tag of $1.65 billion. |

| I'm not an optimist or a pessimist. I tend to be a be a realist. Relating the aforementioned quotes to selling, I believe that optimists find it difficult to challenge people. I can easily slide over to the pessimistic side when necessary, like when it's time to debrief a salesperson on a recent call. It's difficult to punch holes or question a salesperson's account of a call if you are an optimist. Optimists often become overexcited and set unrealistic expectations about the likely outcome of an opportunity. I believe you must be able to slide back and forth between optimism and pessimism. Get yourself motivated and excited, be realistic about what's happening, and challenge people when what you hear doesn't sound right. |

| The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has approved the conversion of the Olabisi Onabanjo University Community Bank Limited into a microfinance bank. The community bank has operated on the campus of Olabisi Onabanjo University in Ago-Iwoye, Nigeria since March of 2003, and the majority of its shareholders are affiliated with the university. One source reports that, in its first year in business, the bank made a surplus that was “far in excess of its total paid up capital,” but no other sources were found to corroborate this information and no further information was found on the OOU Community Bank. |

| China's ability to attract massive amounts of foreign investment does not derive entirely from its economic growth rate or the size of its population, observed Stephen J. Kobrin, Professor of Multinational Management, The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, USA. Rather, China leads the developing world in liberalizing its foreign investment policies, he noted. Felipe Larra Bascu Professor of Economics, Catholic University of Chile, Chile, challenged this view, saying he believed that it was China's large marketplace, high growth rate and low costs rather than its investment policies driving FDI. Between these extremes, Paul A. Laudicina, Managing Director, A.T. Kearney, USA, said that interviews with his firm's clients revealed that it was both the size of China's marketplace and its policies that were luring investment.
