Lesson #5: Take Time Off to Tune Up
| |
| When Orfalea first rented his little $100 per week garage near the USC campus, he was told his venture would never work. It was a pipe dream, they said. It was a business that would flunk as fast as Orfalea had in school. Still, says Orfalea, “I didn’t listen. I knew what I was going to do.” |

One source reports that, in its first year in business, the bank made a surplus that was “far in excess of its total paid up capital,” but no other sources were found to corroborate this information and no further information was found on the OOU Community Bank. |

One Copy at a Time: Kinko’s Takes Off
| |
| Orfalea had been a student at USC when he noticed a copy machine in the school library. He realized that few people had access to the new technology and decided to do something about it. With a $5,000 loan from the bank, Orfalea rented out a 100-square-foot garage behind a hamburger stand near his campus. In addition to selling school supplies, Orfalea bought a copier and began charging 2.5-cent copies. The store was so small that the copier had to be used out on the sidewalk in front. He called his business “Kinko’s” after his childhood nickname. |

The Capitalist With A Heart: The Early Years Of Brett Wilson

| When Brett Wilson was in university, he persuaded a local dancer to re-enact Lady Godiva’s infamous horseback ride across campus as a stunt. Campus feminists were none too pleased, but they would be proud of Wilson today. The self-described “capitalist with a heart” has made a name for himself not only as the “nice” Dragon on CBC’s Dragon’s Den, but also as a savvy businessman, and a generous and innovative philanthropist who divides his time among his many passions in life. |

The Super Achiever Stuck
| |
| "Strive for excellence" was the mantra in the alternative school my children attended. It was a high priced, beautifully appointed campus made up of the best and the brightest. Sounds good, huh?
Not so fast. Now, years later I see the damage that stress and over achievement cost. You see, all the kids who went there drove themselves crazy being excellent. The translation of the word really meant, did you get all A's and how many fancy Ivy League schools accepted you into the rarified air of the privileged few. |
