Are You A Defensive Driver?
| |
| My partner Jack said something the other day that got me thinking. For those of you who don't know, Jack is affectionately referred to as Mr. Magoo when he drives. It basically means that he does whatever he wants and assumes everyone else will react to him. I think this quote from Jack explains it all. "Everyone is trained to be a defensive driver, so I count on them being defensive while I'm busy being Mr. Magoo." |

Zeroing In On Bad Economy Business Basics
| |
| A client called me recently to discuss a new venture. Before he could start, however, he had to vent for almost five minutes: About the state of Wall Street; about the problems with the government bailout intervention (or "interference," as he put it); and about the poor health of the economy in general.

The Mighty Amazon: Bezos Books his Ticket for Success
| |
| “I’m going to do this crazy thing,” Bezos told his boss on Wall Street one day. “I’m going to start this company selling books online.” It was the spring of 1994 and the Internet was growing at 2,300 percent a year. Bezos knew things just didn’t grow that fast. “It’s highly unlikely,” he says, “and that started me thinking, ‘What kind of business plan might make sense in that context of growth?’” |

Mobile TV\'s Messed-Up Marketing
| |
| For reasons unbeknownst to me (okay, almost certainly hoping I'd say nice things about their phone and service), Sprint bestowed on me a freebie phone some time back, as well as a full-service package of voice, video, and data. I've cheerfully taken advantage of having a second mobile phone -- it comes in useful when in the car on long conference calls and needing to order take-out pizza -- but I have to confess that one aspect of it has surprised me. |

The Top Ten Reasons Why PR Doesn't Work

Every Media Mention Counts

Responding
| |
| When you respond to life, that's positive; when you react to life, that's negative. Example: you get sick and go to the doctor. Chances are good that after an examination he or she would give you a prescription with instructions to return in several days. When you walk back in if the doctor starts shaking his head and says, "It looks like your body is reacting to the medicine, we're going to have to change it," you probably would get a little nervous. However, if the doctor smiled and said, "You're looking great! Your body is responding to the medication," you would get excited and feel much better. Yes, responding to life is good. Reacting to the incidents of life is negative - and that's bad. The next example validates that fact.

The Secrets to Successfully Landing Media Coverage
| |
| When it comes to approaching the media, keep in mind that there is no one media outlet. You are not pitching one story, nor are you pitching one media source. To be successful you need to be developing a number of different stories to pitch to a variety of different media outlets. Each media source has needs and interests that are specific to it. The primary secret to a successful PR campaign is to focus on what the various media outlets need and pitch each outlet accordingly.
|
|
|
How to Launch a Targeted PR Campaign
| |
| Media begets media; that’s the name of the game. So if you’re stuck focusing strictly on the media home runs, rethink your strategy. Don’t limit your pitches to the national media outlets; there’s a huge media world out there. Broaden your approach. Broaden the media bull’s-eye you’re targeting.

However, in recent years, there have been many who have questioned whether the country could withstand competition from other locations with competitive pricing and a specialized skill set.

5 Principles of Successful Leadership in Small Business
| |
| When we think about leadership, especially in regard to building and growing a successful small business, it's easy to envision the traditional top-down leadership that so often goes along with the term. We often think about leadership along the lines of being a major political leader or being the chief executive of a major Wall Street company. And while this certainly is a respectable vision of leadership, when it comes to small business, we've got to see beyond this traditional view. Following are the top 5 principles of successful leadership that I've found make THE difference in whether your business flies or flops. |

Small Business Growth: Recession Rescue Strategies
| |
| This week alone, I have heard from two business owners going "under"... literally closing their doors and, of course, blaming the economy. I must say that both of these companies started out with overwhelming debt, and neither had shown a month of profit since opening their doors. They were both open BEFORE the "recession" hit. Both invested heavily in traditional marketing. Both inquired about hiring a business coach, but never felt it worth the investment. THIS is the Darwinian-like "thinning of the herd" that we will continue to observe in "tough times". But you don't have to be one of those eliminated... So, what can you do NOW to rescue your own business today? |

Our Gas Tanks Are Full But We're Running On Empty

| Lots of negative news out there. While we're running around making sure our schedules our filled with things to do we forget that our spirits are running on empty. In so doing, you can fill up your inner tank to power you in a more productive and positive direction to make the best of what IS. |

Time to buy banks with mark-to-market behind them?
| |
| Yesterday, the FASB eliminated mark to market accounting standards. Now they will be priced based on their income, not what a buyer would pay for them in the market. This will create a lot of uncertainty around some of the toxic assets on banks balance sheets, as well as the TALF program. |

Skill and Knowledge are Telemarketing Partners
| |
| Telemarketing is nothing new. Since early in this century, Wall Street brokers have used the telephone to sell securities, commodities, stocks and bonds to customers scattered across the country. Then, it was primarily a matter of logistics. The world was large, and telephone sales offered a practical alternative to the inconvenience of telegraphic communications. |

Ponzi Schemes and Steroids These are the Days of our Lives

| When you step back and look at the leading economy of the world (the US economy), you can’t help but think that we have come to one “MAJOR FORK IN THE ROAD”. The purchase of a home can be like a ball and chain that prevents people from reaching their full potential in some cases. If 2008 is not a wakeup call to understand finance better, then the future of the U.S. economy is in for even further long term challenges.

How You Can Get Your Blog Featured in CNN, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Other Major Media Outlets
| |
| About six months ago I was looking at the web stats of one of our clients. His visits went from an average of 30 a day to 150. When I checked who was sending him so much traffic I was very surprised. It was CNN! I started doing some research on the subject and I learned how you can get your blog featured on CNN, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Newsweek, Time, Fox News, Reuters, the Washington Post, and CBS. |
