Leaving the Sheep Behind: Marriott Hits It Big
In 1937, Marriott’s Hot Shoppe No. 8 became the home of his next innovation. Since it was located near an airport, Marriott noticed that airline passengers would often stop off to his store and buy lunch to eat on board. With that came Marriott’s idea to sell pre-boxed meals directly to airlines. It was the launch of an entire new industry, and Marriott was soon selling lunches to more than 20 flights a day from that one airport.

Lesson #2: “Great companies are built by people who never stop thinking about ways to improve the business.”
Marriott was born into a household poor enough to know that success is never final. No matter how hard he worked, or how much he wanted something to work, the only thing Marriott could be assured of was that change was going to come. To that end, Marriott learned early on how to use that change to his advantage. He did it by focusing on innovation.

Just In Time
"Just In Time" is a factory warehousing idea that has roots in Japanese efficiency practices. It used to be that factories would warehouse the things they need to produce their products. Because of the timelines involved they might have three, six or even twelve months' supplies sitting in warehouses. By having inventory on hand factories could insure regular production schedules. They would not have to shut down production because they didn't have some necessary item.

Lesson #3: Take Advantage of New Technologies
“I don’t care about being bigger, because I’m already bigger than I ever expected to be,” Oprah says. “My constant focus is on being better. Should I be doing multimedia video production? Or seminars on the Internet? How can I do what I’m already doing in a more forceful way?” Oprah’s ability to consistently take advantage of new media and technology is one of the distinguishing features of her massive success. Harpo Studios, Oprah’s brainchild, has successfully grown from a one-show production to a multi-billion dollar media powerhouse thanks to its expansion into different media.

Improving Management of Oil Revenue during Periods of Price Booms
With more than 100 billion barrels, Africa had 9 per cent of the world’s oil reserves by the end of 2003. Half are located in North Africa. In sub-Saharan Africa, the oil-producing countries can be divided into three categories: the old ones where production is in decline (Congo, Cameroon and Gabon); those where production is still on the increase (Angola, Nigeria); and the new members of the club (Equatorial Guinea, Chad and São Tomé and Principe). However, most of these countries have suffered from the “oil curse” finding themselves heavily indebted and impoverished.

Sectoral Trends of FDI in Developing Countries: Background
The recent waves of globalisation have substantially transformed the modes of production and trade in both developed and developing countries. This is reflected in the changes in the extent of information and technology in the workplace, firm’s production and organisational strategies, trade and FDI liberalisation policies, and new rules of international trade and investment. Given these developments, the sectoral trends (primary, manufacturing and services) in FDI have changed rapidly over the past two decades.

Content … Keeping the Old Gals Around for a Few More Years
It was great to see all the new capture, production toys at NAB. The camera, production board, software had the content people -- Katzenberger, Moonves (CBS), Carey (News Corp), other major/minor players -- huddling around all their new high def and 3D stuff every minute the show floor was open. When the lights went out and all that content was sent back to the lowly under appreciated storage systems. The same was true of the consumer/prosumer capture/production products that were displayed. The only difference is the storage devices were smaller. In addition to 1-5GB solutions lots of people use the more compact 500GB-1TB storage units that incorporated advanced security technology. Cameras, software, people get their names in lights but when was the last time you saw a 5TB storage unit listed on the film's credits.
