Critics were skeptical of Foreman’s decision to return to boxing after some ten years. He was out of shape, some said. He was only in it for the publicity, said others. They were right about one thing – Foreman was definitely no longer in his prime.

Lesson #1: “I learned to make people love me to get my message across.”
As a boxer, Foreman was known as a mean and ruthless fighter. He fought with fury rather than grace; he stormed around the ring with rage while his opponents danced around him. He even showed up to fight Muhammad Ali with a fierce German Shepherd at his side. It was not so much a persona as his actual personality. He was unpopular both in the ring and out, and unless he was willing to make some changes, Foreman knew that nobody would want to listen to him talk, let along buy anything from him.

Lesson #2: “I've learned that it doesn't matter what you do, if you learn to sell, you will never starve.”
Not only did Foreman learn how to market himself and influence how people viewed him outside of the boxing ring, but so too did he develop expert salesmanship skills. Over time, Foreman would become an advertiser’s dream come true thanks to his ability to sell anything from food to appliances to cleaning products.

Lesson #3: “Integrity is how I do business. That’s my main asset.”
Foreman might be one of the most well-known celebrities thanks to his seemingly endless string of product endorsements. Indeed, he now readily admits to being more well-known for his George Foreman Grills than he ever was for his champion boxing career. Still, Foreman did not approach the idea of lending his name to a product lightly. No matter how small the product, Foreman cross-checked the product with his own personal beliefs, and refused to attach himself to anything that did not meet his standards.

Lesson #4: “You put out a lot of buckshot, you’re going to strike one.”
Married with ten children, Foreman is unarguably a big family man. As it turns out, one of his greatest business inspirations also happens to be right from within his own family.

Lesson #5: “I let negativity roll off me like water off a duck’s back.”
Growing up, Foreman’s life was not an easy one. He experienced one setback after another, each threatening to veer him off course towards greatness. Foreman, however, managed to overcome. From acknowledging his own weaknesses to avoiding the destructive power of negativity, Foreman’s career is evidence that greatness can often come from a path of greater struggle.
