Just In Time
"Just In Time" is a factory warehousing idea that has roots in Japanese efficiency practices. It used to be that factories would warehouse the things they need to produce their products. Because of the timelines involved they might have three, six or even twelve months' supplies sitting in warehouses. By having inventory on hand factories could insure regular production schedules. They would not have to shut down production because they didn't have some necessary item.

The Art of Distribution
One of the important insights that the Startups 2006 panel hammered home was the importance of distribution for consumer-facing startups. (By the way, an astounding 13,000 people watched this video during the first week.) Many people use the word “distribution” as if it were a tactic when in fact it is a goal. Any bozo can say the word as if it’s a magic bullet; the test is the ability to achieve distribution. Here are my thoughts.

Tracking Your Media Coverage
Your press release is ready to go. You have decided which audience you want to target and determined that your release is going to newspapers, magazines, internet wire services, and television and radio stations. You decided to pay the Acme Marketing firm to professionally write your press release. As a part of their writing the press release, they will also do the distribution for you. This saves you time and money. But how will you know if the release was picked up by any of the media outlets on your distribution?

Number of SKUs and Business Complexity
Member Question: I am sure you all agree that more SKUs (finished goods) the company has in its portfolio the more complex (and more expensive) its business becomes. However I wonder how this relationship works exactly? Can anyone recommend formula (or link) that explains (shows impact of) number of SKUs on logistics / supply chain costs (handling, warehousing, transportation), forecast accuracy, level of stocks, etc?

Why Salespeople Fail and How You Could Have Predicted It
The companies at which this salesperson had prior success were with brands you know well, that everyone in the world already carried, with established distribution. All he had to do was grow what had already been established by others before him. After all, how much new distribution had to be created for Oscar-Mayer Wieners?

How Do I Fire My Son Toby? My Wife Won’t Allow It
"I love Toby. He's my oldest son, he's Vice President of Sales but he just doesn't get it. My daughter should be running this business, she's brilliant but she's married to a surgeon and doesn't want anything to do with wholesale distribution. She's quite happy with all the charity work she is involved in. My youngest son has potential but he's only twenty two and just isn't ready to take over a 0 million dollar distribution business. Two events have occurred recently that are wearing on me a little. First, I transferred 75% of my stock equally to my three kids, 25% each. All three receive a salary although my daughter rarely appears at the office due to her charity work. The second event occurred after I hired a succession consultant to help me transition into retirement. He told me that Toby was incompetetent.

Reinventing the Partnership with the Manufacturer
Distribution will always play a role in the supply channel. Manufacturers just can't do what distribution does effectively. But, distributors must recognize that change is upon them. They too must adjust to the evolution taking place in the supply chain. Today's distributors have the opportunity to reinvent the relationship and create a model that is mutually beneficial to both parties.

My neighbor Charlie, just filed for bankruptcy
My neighbor Charlie, just filed for bankruptcy It was the prime topic for conversation this past weekend, so I suppose you could say this is a cautionary tale. What’s got everyone talking (and one or two of the neighbors a bit fearful) is that Charlie seemed to be doing OK. He had solo-consulting practice, advising retailers on supply chain issues such as transportation and warehousing.
