Facing and addressing the challenges as an SME in Kenya
The recent political and social skirmishes in Kenya have added an extra layer of challenges to the Kenyan business community, the SME sector being one of the worst affected. The reason I say this is unlike big business that have cash reserves that help them weather the storm, the SME sector commonly operates on working capital and day-to-day cash, the reserve that is there is primarily used to pay bills and source for new business.

Never Sell Alone
Sales can be a lonely game. During an economic downturn, sometimes it can be downright depressing. One of the best ways to keep morale high is being able to look around and know that you're dealing with the tough times as a team. You don't have to weather the storm alone.

Better Finance Brokers
The positive side of the current financial position is that in times like these, the better finance broker become easier to find. Car finance brokers who can weather this tough financial storm are generally those with high levels of dedicated service, access to a wide selection of loans, and the lower cost loans. Many successful brokers are now reaping the benefits their previous hard work has provided, in the form of referral customers.

Reduction in Force needs to be a “Surgical Strategy”
During tough economic times a reduction in force (RIF) often becomes a necessity for many companies. Let’s face it; payroll expense is probably the biggest expense for the majority of companies in business today. Unfortunately, many leaders have a tendency to panic and make across the board cuts without regard for the long term effects, including employee morale and the overall health of the company and its ability to weather the economic storm.

What is the Difference Between Weather and Climate?
Weather and climate - aren't they the same? No, the principal difference is the measure of time. Weather is the description of conditions over a short time period and in a localized area or region. In contrast, climate describes the sum of weather conditions over an extended period of time.

Planning to Grow When Everyone Else is Trying to Survive
The economy is in a mess. The politicians and Wall Street gurus can't seem to figure out a solution. Everywhere you look the news is gone from bad to worse. The Stock market is down, unemployment is up, and consumer confidence is down, what's next? After all of the pundits, reporters, prognosticators, so called "financial advisers" and economic experts are done talking I am left with just one question: where do we go from here? If I listen to all of the above, I get the feeling that the best I can do is tie myself to the ship and hope to weather the storm. But what if I choose not to listen to all of the above? Is there another alternative? You bet there is. I am planning for growth and opportunity in the midst of this economic turmoil. Yes, I believe this is possible. In fact, not only possible, but likely if you take the right steps.

Disaster Continuity Planning
According to a report by SCORE on the impact of disasters on U.S. small businesses, natural and manmade disasters have increased by 40% over the last 15 years. The likelihood that you'll experience one is too high to ignore. About 25% of businesses do not reopen following a major disaster. You need to plan ahead to make sure you can weather the storm (pun intended) and continue to be profitable.

Depression
February is considered the most depressing month of the year. The festivities of the holidays are over and there is no break in the weather for what seems like forever! This combination of decreased sunlight and bitter weather conditions helps manifest depressive feelings in many people.

Blinded by the Light
We choose so often to see the safety of what we want to see, instead of the scary storm that's approaching us. When the storm hits - we drop to our knees in shock and ask, "What the heck happened? How can this be?"

That dog won’t hunt
Here we are at the end of March already. I was talking with a friend the other day about an old farmer’s adage we used to anticipate in March regarding the weather: “In like a lamb, out like a lion.” Or “In like a lion, out like a lamb.” The expectation was that if we had harsh winter weather at the beginning of March we would have mild weather at the end – and vice versa. I have no idea why that is expected but it reminds me of all the little clichés that we accept as reality. As farmers we also used to cite, “Red in the morning, sailors warning; red at night, sailors delight.”
