| There are the dictionary definitions of retirement -- withdrawal from work because of age; the time that follows the end of someone’s working life; withdrawal into privacy or seclusion -- and there’s the reality of retirement as you are either close to or already experiencing it – and it doesn’t have much to do with any of these dictionary definitions. Let’s look back to get a good view of the real shape of the ‘new’ retirement. |

Are you arrogant or is it healthy self love?

| There is a difference between thinking positive, loving thoughts about yourself and being arrogant. According to Webster’s Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary, the definition of arrogance is, “a feeling or an impression of superiority manifested in an over bearing manner or presumptuous claims.”
Arrogance comes from a place of thinking you’re better than others which is a place of judgment. And, this stems from fear, insecurity or ignorance. This it’s not genuine self-love.

| How about you? Do you have a mentor? Do you have someone you talk to on a regular basis about your career, life, job and anything else that is important in your life? I don’t mean a friend, or a buddy, I mean a mentor. Someone who will listen with an open mind and give you the straight advice you need. Webster defines mentor as: “A wise and trusted counselor or teacher”. Do you have one?

I recently read Charles Webster Hawthorne on Painting, collected by Mrs. Charles. W. Hawthorne with an Introduction by Edwin Dickinson, an Appreciation by Hans Hoffman, and Biographical Notes by Joseph Hawthorne, his son.
These forty tools I gleaned from Hawthorne’s tips to help his students create more masterful paintings. In working to understand these forty tools, I felt like one of his students. I wish the same for you.
