Quit Swinging the Bat and Start Hitting the Ball
Correct technique can assure favorable outcomes. But focusing on technique alone can become a distraction.

Reference Requests for Salespeople
For the first time in months, I was recently asked for references. No problem! But it got me thinking about who asks for references, why they ask for references and when they ask for references...and what salespeople do when they're asked for references, and whether those references lead to closed business. As I thought this through, quite surprisingly, my three largest personal clients - all multi-billion dollar corporations, never asked. Three medium sized companies - over $100 million - never asked. I am personally working with only a handful of smaller companies and only one of them asked. Those insights tie directly to why people ask for references:

Lesson #3: Think Long-Term
“We weren’t trying to just go public and get rich,” recalls Gates of his early Microsoft days. “There was no near-term thing. It always was this many-decades thing where there were no shortcuts and we’d sort of put one foot in front of the other.”

Buying Back Customers
Five other peoples joined us for dinner. My wife and I ordered “medium rare.” We were served “well done.” Three others in our group weren’t happy with their dinners as well. I didn’t cross the establishment off my list. I complained.

Recipe for Home Business Success: Why Patience Determination and Willingness to Learn are Paramount
The pyramids weren’t built in one day and they certainly weren’t completed with people throwing tantrums, giving up or refusing to look at innovative ways to create a masterpiece. Every entrepreneur – from the fledgling young marketer selling lemonade on a makeshift stand to the newbie franchise owner to the home-based entrepreneur – has high hopes and dreams for his efforts. It is said that every business begins with one dream. What you do with that dream will mean the difference between success and failure.

Increase Sales by Getting Strangers Coming to You
When you were little weren’t you told, “Don’t talk to strangers?” Of course you were. The adults around you told you this to protect you from harm.

Lesson #2: “So what if it’s just fun?”
“We were working at Odeo, but we weren’t as passionate about the podcasting service as we should have been,” recalls Stone. “We weren’t using it, and that was a problem. Twitter got started because Ev gave us some freedom to think along different lines.”

What’s the buyer’s responsibility?
I was going to call one of my books “I’d close more sales if it weren’t for the buyer” thinking that people would laugh at the silliness. But when I got an immediate standing ovation from 600 people when I said this, I realized that sales people believed it, ridiculous though it is. It’s like saying I’d have had a better birth if it weren’t for my mother.
