Three-Step Dance to Success

Become a Master in Listening
Did you know that the Chinese symbol for listening consists of 10 distinct elements? They combine meanings like “king, ear, eye, heart, sense and respect” into one symbol. What does that tell you? Obviously the entire culture of the Far East perceives listening as extremely valuable and is trained to get a lot of information beyond the spoken word: Context, emotion, cultural background or intentions. As a sharp contrast, our Western culture emphasizes verbal and written expression, powerful speaking, articles and books as part of individual development. This cultural underpinning is subconscious and might impact our readiness to listen effectively.

Seeing Perfection without Judgment
Happiness does not depend on outward things, but on the way we see them. Leo Tolstoy Do we hold a vision of perfection in our life? Taking in an exquisite sunset, gazing at the ocean waves, smelling pine trees in a forest, gives us a feeling or sense of perfection and beauty. We can experience perfection when we watch a child laugh and play, or as we complete an exciting project we worked on. Yet there are many times when perfection seems like a far off dream; something we can't quite grasp. We become caught up in the struggle of a situation, or frustrated because someone else doesn't seem to live up to our expectations. We may criticize our self because we are not attractive enough, funny enough, bright enough, or as resourceful as we think we should be.

Culture is enduring, difficult to develop or reshape.Despite that, fundamental culture change is necessary for the reforms envisaged in Results for Canadians.

Intellectual Property Rights - The Chinese Challenge
Doing business with China presents many opportunities but with that come many challenges too. Different attitudes towards knowledge and rules means that China is perhaps culturally opposed to the very notion of intellectual property. Chinese culture respects the knowledge itself and not the ownership of that knowledge and this culture has slowly developed over 5000 years. Moves are being made within China to address the issue of IP ownership, there are more courts, trials and prosecutions but Western organisations will still need to tread with caution regarding their IP rights when it comes to doing business in this exciting economy.

Managing in China Without Coaching
- Published by CONCHIUS in Shanghai Star Business Journal 31 March, 2008. In most Western countries, leaders are used to working in an environment where the employees are highly participating in meetings and contributing their opinions and experiences to the decision making process. A Western employee feels comfortable to argue for their beliefs and to share opinions in meetings with superiors. Furthermore, a manager in the West is not necessarily assumed to be an expert in his field or industry. On the contrary, he is supposed to utilize the knowledge in his team in decisions and projects. The Western managers are therefore used to lead highly interactive teams relying heavily on two-way communication. When a team achieves strong synergy, he can and will step down. The team becomes creative and manage it-self.
