Leadership Takes Balance
| |
| The Wheel of Life is a workshop I have taught for years. It’s a personal assessment tool of the balance in your life, and your satisfaction and development in each of eight areas of your life. My eight areas are: Career; Money & Life Planning; Health – Physical, Emotional, Spiritual; Family & Friends; Significant Other; Personal Development & Contribution; Fun & Relaxation; and Physical Environment. The idea is to develop all these areas equitably to meet your needs. |

Assess – Are You a Victim or a Victor?
| |
| Before you can determine where you are going, you need to assess where you are right now. The act of assessing allows us to establish benchmarks from which we can action. If you are interested in being a victor in 2009 and tired of being a victim, maybe it is time to assess your life.

How Balanced is YOUR Life?
| |
| Contrary to popular belief, balance is not an end point destination or a “thing” to be acquired. It is dynamic and always changing. Balance is more of a process not a place. A balanced life will look very different from one person to the next. The challenge is that most people have not given much thought to what a balanced life truly means to them. |

| |
| Do you wish you had more time to do the things you like to do? Do you find yourself juggling too many things, wishing you could get off the merry-go-round? This can feel like such a powerless place to be. Many people talk about wanting balance but do you know how to achieve it? |

AN EXAMPLE OF AN ACTION PLAN
| |
| Some helpful hints to enhance the possibility of attainment of goals:
1. Commitment and a planned approach to an Action Plan or a Learning Plan is more likely to achieve results. Goals must be written down.
2. Be expressed in the present tense, as if they were real.
3. Clear and sharp focus on the short steps necessary to achieve the results.
To illustrate how this might work in real life, let us take an example of an athlete who wants to improve the speed at which he or she runs 1500m. Here is an example what An Action Plan to achieve the goal might look like: |

| Why you shouldn’t copy someone else’s terms of business
“Never Re-invent the wheel” was the advice I was given when I started in business. And that’s a great adage which I still use today. But if you are looking for a wheel for your car, you don’t go to the local cycle shop. That’s what some people do when it comes to their terms of business – copy those of another business and then realise (when it is too late) that they are completely unsuitable.

Why We MUST Reinvent The Wheel
| |
| "Don't waste time reinventing the wheel!" How many times have we heard this from software vendors trying to convince us their product is exactly what we need? Of course the wheels on offer come in many different shapes and sizes and we'll be lucky to find one that fits properly and performs well in our business for the next 5, 10 or 20 years. Unfortunately in the real world every business is unique and ours is no exception. This means we really have no option but to "reinvent the wheel" if we are to make the most of what computer technology has to offer in the long term. |

The Chakra System

| Chakra is a Sanskrit word that means “wheel”. The Chakra system is the belief that the body has seven spinning wheels of energy from head to toe, and each wheel offers life lessons to advance our souls if we choose to uncover them. The Chakra's are mapped out in the palms of our hands. |

Talent Development and The Wheel of Becoming
| |
| In the Buddhist belief, the Wheel of Becoming is a representation of life, death, and rebirth. The energy produced by one’s past actions (karma) are paid forward into future outcomes. Practitioners can determine their place within the concentric circles of the wheel, which delineate the various realms of being (see the graphic above).
In talent management terms, think of the Wheel of Becoming as transitioning from one level of personal development to rebirth at a higher level. There are many models of human development (see Jane Lovinger’s “Stages of Ego Development”, or Robert Kegans “The Evolving Self” to name but two). One that fits neatly with the concept of Wheel of Becoming, however, is “The Leadership Pipeline” by Charan, Drodder, and Noel.

Focus and Context: The Hub of Leadership
| |
| It wasn't by accident that we chose to arrange the timeless leadership principles in the shape of a wheel. Of all the principles, there is one that is central, one from which the others emanate, much as spokes radiate from the hub of a wheel. |
