Lesson #2: Learning is a Process of Trial and Error

Neither Moore nor Noyce were natural-born businessmen. They were scientists, people who felt more comfortable inside the walls of a laboratory than within the four walls of an office boardroom. They had spent the majority of their youth conducting science experiments rather than doing sales, playing with molecules and electrons instead of learning about contracts and markets. However, once the two decided to branch off on their own and create Intel, they knew that their success would rest upon how well they could learn by trial and error.

The Ultimate Fighting Champion: Dana White is Born

The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) used to be nothing more than an underground fighting league, and one which was scarcely accepted in the U.S. That was, until Dana White came along. White transformed the UFC into one of the most mainstream and popular sports on the scene today. By cleaning up its image and marketing it as a legitimate sport, White was able to create a successful organization, whose events can now be seen on television in more than 35 countries around the world.

Stepping Into the Ring: The UFC Fights Back

“It was around 1997 or 1998 that it all turned around for us,” says White. “We were all boxing guys and I used to think UFC was a joke. I would say, ‘those guys would get their asses kicked by a boxer.” That was, until White and the Feretti brothers began taking Jujitsu lesson, which White says, “opened our eyes to a whole new world. It literally changed my life.”

Lesson #1: Fight the Limits That Are Imposed On You

When White first began thinking about taking control of the UFC, there was nary a supportive voice to be found. Based on the organization’s past history, there were few who believed it could become the success that White envisioned. Almost immediately after the purchase, the media began to speculate about the “oodles and oodles of money” that the company was already losing. Nevertheless, just five years later, the UFC had become the largest pay-per-view provider in the world, and was generating more in tax revenues for the state of Nevada than had any boxing promoter in the past. How did White do it?

Your Limitations - Are they a Black Swan?

| umor me for a moment today. Please close your eyes and envision a swan. Now, take a few moments and describe that swan. What words did you use? White, graceful, bird, clean, dirty, ugly duckling, etc.
Long ago, in Europe, everyone believed that all swans were white. Why was that? Well, it was because all anyone had ever seen were swans that were white. Everyone thought that until in 1967. That was when Australia was found as well as the black swan.
So what does this have to do with organizing or productivity? Keep reading to find out!

Go for brown!

Do you remember making craft glue out of white flour and water at school? Remember how it set like cement when you used it? And how bad it smelled after sitting on the desk for a few hours? Well, every time you eat white breads, pasta and rice, they turn into craft glue in your stomach, becoming foul, sticking to the walls of your bowel and sucking the life out of you. I call it ‘bum glue’ and it’s just as charming as it sounds.

No Bum Glue

‘Bum Glue’ is the term I use to describe refined and processed grains. Do you remember at school, we used to make glue out of white flour and water? Remember how it smelled after a few hours and how it set like cement when you used it? Well, that same cement-like action is happening inside your body every time you eat white breads, pasta and rice. And after it has been in there for a while, it becomes foul, sticking to the walls of your bowel and sucking the life out of you.

Doing Good and Having Fun Can Transcend a Language Barrier

| Well I am on day three down here in the Dominican Republic and somehow my body is still functioning. I won't lie ... I am not someone that partakes in much physical labor. It's not that I don't enjoy it ... well ok, I don't, but I am loving every second of it down here. :)
Today we were up early and headed back to the school in Herrera to do some painting. Our little 12 person team painted four classrooms and the kitchen! The walls were quite dirty to begin with but once we were finished everything looked fresh and new! If only we could see the looks on the students faces when they return to the newly painted walls. I am sure they'll enjoy it since they are some of the most appreciative people I've ever met. |
