Lesson #5: Trust Your Gut
| |
| When Cowell first started out at BMG, he wanted more than anything to produce a hit and prove himself to be a valuable contribution to the company after years of rejection by the industry. Oddly enough, he decided to look in the direction of professional wrestling. His colleagues thought he was crazy, but Cowell had a hunch that if young boys would pay to watch professional wrestling and buy all the related merchandise, they would surely also buy a WWF-themed record sung by the superstar wrestlers themselves. |

Lesson #3: Your Work Ethic Is Your Most Important Asset
| |
| “I'm not too good at lying still in the sun,” says McMahon. “I have to do something with my mind, or I'll get in trouble.” By all accounts, McMahon was obsessed with wrestling since he was a little boy, and he continues to be just as devoted a fan today. It is his passion for his work that allows him to maintain the strong work ethic that he has, working long after his competitors have already gone to sleep. |

Lesson #5: Be Clear About Who You Are
| |
| “When you think about it, you should compare the World Wrestling Federation to other major entertainment companies or motion picture studios,” says McMahon. “We are Hollywood. We're entertainment, and that's what the World Wrestling Federation is all about.” |

Wrestling
| |
| Recently I did something that was totally out of character for me. I always talk about taking chances - whether in business or in life -- and this time I really took a big one. I agreed to take part in a huge WWE wrestling extravaganza, headed up by an amazing man named Vince McMahon. He can put on a show the likes of which I’ve never seen. |

Should You Give Away Information or Charge for It?
| |
| Should you give away information or charge for it? This is the question that many marketers find themselves wrestling with. It can be difficult to make this decision; however, you do need to realize that there is a very fine line between the amount of information you can give away and the amount of information that should be saved for people who are willing to pay for it. |

Content Everywhere…In What Form, What Format?
| |
| Photo and video content is everywhere. It is rapidly becoming the leading form
of communications, information and entertainment. Where is the technology going?
What lies ahead? We spent two days at the 6Sight Conference in Monterey listening

Play the Point, Not the Score
| |
| I watched Rafael Nadal play two incredible matches at the Australian Open over the weekend. In the semifinals, he defeated Fernando Verdasco in a 5 hour and 14 minute match 6-7(4) 6-4 7-6(2) 6-7(1) 6-4. He returned to the court a little over 40 hours later and defeated Roger Federer 7-5 3-6 7-6(3) 3-6 6-2 in a match lasting 4 hours and 23 minutes. If you are a tennis player, you know this is an amazing physical and emotional achievement. |

US health club chains AnyTime and Snap Fitness looking to expand internationally
| |
| As cross-town rivals, Snap Fitness and Anytime Fitness are in corporate arm-wrestling match of sorts for bragging rights as the nation’s foremost industry operator.
The two fitness featherweights both operate small, 24/7 neighborhood fitness and health clubs and are enjoying explosive growth since coming online earlier this decade, a stark contrast to the plethora of U.S. companies that have slashed expansion plans or downsized operations in the wake of the national recession. |

How To Make Reality Catch Up.
| |
| In the late 1970s, Jim Fannin was coaching Adriano Panatta, one of the top-ranked tennis players in the world and a former French Open champion. He tells the story of Panatta’s quarterfinal match with one of the newcomers at an ATP tournament.
“As the match unfolded, this low-ranked, left-handed, red-headed jerk of a guy has no respect for a top-ranked player in the world. He stalls. He berates an umpire. He yells at a ball kid. He crushes my player! We are humiliated!” |
