“I'm an entrepreneur,” says McMahon. “I take chances in life…I got balls the size of grapefruits!”

Lesson #5: Trust Your Gut

When Cowell first started out at BMG, he wanted more than anything to produce a hit and prove himself to be a valuable contribution to the company after years of rejection by the industry. Oddly enough, he decided to look in the direction of professional wrestling. His colleagues thought he was crazy, but Cowell had a hunch that if young boys would pay to watch professional wrestling and buy all the related merchandise, they would surely also buy a WWF-themed record sung by the superstar wrestlers themselves.

Lesson #3: Your Work Ethic Is Your Most Important Asset

“I'm not too good at lying still in the sun,” says McMahon. “I have to do something with my mind, or I'll get in trouble.” By all accounts, McMahon was obsessed with wrestling since he was a little boy, and he continues to be just as devoted a fan today. It is his passion for his work that allows him to maintain the strong work ethic that he has, working long after his competitors have already gone to sleep.

Lesson #5: Be Clear About Who You Are

“When you think about it, you should compare the World Wrestling Federation to other major entertainment companies or motion picture studios,” says McMahon. “We are Hollywood. We're entertainment, and that's what the World Wrestling Federation is all about.”

Wrestling

Recently I did something that was totally out of character for me. I always talk about taking chances - whether in business or in life -- and this time I really took a big one. I agreed to take part in a huge WWE wrestling extravaganza, headed up by an amazing man named Vince McMahon. He can put on a show the likes of which I’ve never seen.

Looking for Sky In All The Wrong Places

Ever sit with a single puzzle piece of clouds and wonder how you will ever put the entire sky together? Life as an entrepreneur is often just like that— lots of the little pieces; like creating products, taking care of clients, wrestling computers, etc.— and a whole lot of sky; the big open space that is creating a successful and enjoyable business. I had so many pieces of ‘puzzle sky’, I was drowning in an ocean of sky blue. After over a decade of struggling with my own company to fit all the ‘pieces’ together, I have finally put together the big business puzzle— and it’s not what I thought it would look like.

Should You Give Away Information or Charge for It?

Should you give away information or charge for it? This is the question that many marketers find themselves wrestling with. It can be difficult to make this decision; however, you do need to realize that there is a very fine line between the amount of information you can give away and the amount of information that should be saved for people who are willing to pay for it.

Content Everywhere…In What Form, What Format?

| Photo and video content is everywhere. It is rapidly becoming the leading form
of communications, information and entertainment. Where is the technology going?
What lies ahead? We spent two days at the 6Sight Conference in Monterey listening
and learning about what consumers want (or think they want) and issues hardware/software
producers are wrestling with. Cameras, camcorders, camphones and more...see what
is behind the curtain.

Tracking & Diagnosing Sales Performance

| One of my clients was recently wrestling with a common business challenge - a contracted professional salesperson who was not delivering results. She was uncertain about the correctness of insisting on a report of his activities because her initial request had been met with, "I don't have time for that. I'm busy getting out there seeing people. What do you want: Sales or reports?"
Like most "half truths" this one caused her some angst: She did want sales; activities were not what she was paying for - but the arrangement wasn't working, and she could not see why.

A Very British Home Business

| I have been thinking about writing something on the subject of home business activity in the United Kingdom or Britain, since I founded a publication called The Business Opportunities Advertisers Report And Directory, (The B.O.A.R.D), almost twenty years ago.
As the name implies, this was an assessment of the viability of ready-to-go, usually 'home' business opportunities which very often at that time just as to this day, came from the US.
It soon became clear however, that many US promoters didn't know much about UK small and home business culture or many of the basic legal requirements.
I hope that the following articles prove to be of some use.

Using Retail Freebies for Consumer Packaged Goods Marketing

| For marketers and promoters of consumer packaged goods, one of the most powerful tactics is the use of freebies. A good freebie generally requires no investment on the consumer’s part. While there are many scams out there that mislead consumers simply by using the word ‘free’, most well known brands and CPG companies can be counted on to give their customers a freebie with not just implied value, but actual value as well.
