The title of this post is the name of a great free service. Help a Reporter Out (HARO) is the brain-child of East Coast PR pro Peter Shankman. (I did a podcast with Peter that I will publish shortly, but I wanted you to know about this resource right away.)

Is Your Elevator Pitch a Monologue or a Dialogue?

When most people think “elevator pitch”, they think of a paragraph that they can utter in about 15 seconds that tells people what they do. I’ve written previous articles on "how to craft a pitch" and "how to judge your pitch’s effectiveness". But what most people forget is the goal of the elevator pitch - to start a dialogue.

Effective Business Communication Counts On Lean Writing Skills

| In a business communication world saturated with near-instantaneous electronic messages, I start with the premise that the people you're writing for are too busy to absorb massive clots of verbiage. I'm talking about numbers of words as well as the length of the words themselves. Any thesaurus can give you a multisyllabic replacement for a lean word that hits the spot. Likewise, any bureaucrat or consultant can pile jargon-choked paragraph on top of ponderous paragraph. But to what end?
In a way that might not have occurred to you, effective written communication is really about tone. The best advice I ever got about business writing skills can be summed up this way: "Be yourself, warm and personal. You're writing to real people, not an organization." Another take: "Write as if you're conversing with an intelligent friend."

Power of Visual Thinking in your Visual Workplace

I think Visual Thinking is a powerful tool. For evidence, look at the tools I surround myself with, Value Stream Mapping, The Lean Marketing House and Mindmaps. I believe it is the most effective way to learn. As David said in his last paragraph of the blog cited above: "We're not all visual thinkers (though we all have the potential).

The First Written Music - An Evolving Process

Today's written music may appear to be difficult to read at first glance, but it is nothing compared to the first written music. Music has evolved and changed over time leaving us with an easy way to read and understand it. You may not think so right now, but the earliest written music is truly the most difficult to read, understand and master.

Inspirational Leadership: The Art Of Appreciation II

| I've written often about the primary "need" expressed by most of my clients - the need (or desire) to increase their inspirational leadership. I've also written a good deal about the two basic types of people out there - the Entrepreneur, and the Victim. It turns out the two concepts are linked.
