Wanted: jobs for Africa’s youth - Education and training
“It is clear that to rise out of poverty, the people of our continent need jobs and education,” says ECA Executive Secretary Janneh. “Not just any job, but one that provides a decent wage and employment conditions.” According to the Addis Ababa-based ECA, it is crucial for countries to expand training, lifelong learning, education and other means of improving skills, with a particular focus on young people.

Henry Chasia, Executive Deputy Chairperson, The NEPAD e Africa Commission, South Africa, said this is a massive undertaking. It is necessary to have partnerships, and the private sector IT companies have joined from the very beginning.

The skills and capacity problems of Africa will not be resolved until women, who comprise an estimated 50% of the potential workforce, are recognized, empowered, trained and allowed to take their place in business and government. The Department of Trade and Industry of South Africa has teamed with Old Mutual Group’s Masisizane Fund to launch the Isivande Women’s Fund (IWF), financing women-run enterprises in the country. The new fund is the result of a 2006 study conducted by the DTI’s Gender and Women Empowerment Unit, the International Finance Corporation (IFC), and FinMark. The study found that although women are more responsible managers of credit than men, they only receive 30 percent of loans, with black women receiving the least funding.
